Balloon sinuplasty is a procedure designed to address blocked sinuses. During this minimally invasive procedure, a small, flexible balloon catheter is inserted into the blocked sinus passage. The balloon is then gently inflated to restructure and widen the sinus pathway, and then it is deflated and removed, leaving the sinus open. Here are some post-procedure tips for balloon sinuplasty patients:
Avoid Nose Blowing
Refrain from blowing your nose for a few days after the procedure. This period allows the sinus tissues to begin their healing process without interruption. While you may experience some nasal drainage, it is a normal part of recovery. Let the drainage drip from your nose and gently pat it with a tissue instead of blowing.
The pressure from blowing your nose might interfere with healing tissues. It is a good idea to keep your head elevated, even when resting, because this position helps manage drainage. This minor adjustment supports the body’s natural recovery process.
Prioritize Sleeping
Getting enough rest is a key component of your recovery. Since your body repairs itself during sleep, prioritize getting a full night’s rest. You may feel more tired than usual after a balloon sinuplasty. Listen to your body and rest when you feel the need.
Elevating your head while you sleep is also beneficial. To help reduce congestion and swelling, you can use a few pillows to prop your head and upper body up. It may make sleeping more comfortable and support proper sinus drainage throughout the night. A good night’s sleep typically will help you feel better, and it may help your body heal more efficiently.
While light activities are acceptable, you need to avoid strenuous exercise for about a week. This means no heavy lifting or intense workouts. Overexertion can increase blood pressure, which may lead to unwanted effects in your nasal passages. Plan for a quiet week to allow your body time to recover fully.
Manage Sneezing
Sneezing creates a sudden burst of pressure in your nasal passages. If you feel a sneeze coming on, you should try to keep your mouth open. This action helps redirect the pressure away from your nasal cavities, which protects the healing tissues. An open-mouth sneeze is a simple but effective technique.
Keep Hydrating
Staying hydrated is beneficial for your overall health and recovery. Drinking plenty of water helps thin mucus, which makes it easier for your sinuses to drain. Proper hydration also keeps your nasal passages from becoming too dry and uncomfortable. Keep a water bottle nearby as a reminder to drink fluids throughout the day. You can also hydrate with:
- Tea
- Broth
- Fuit juices
Get Checked After Balloon Sinuplasty
You will have a follow-up appointment scheduled after your procedure, and attending these allows your doctor to monitor your progress and check how your sinuses are healing. This appointment is an ideal time to ask any questions that have come up during your recovery. Your doctor can provide specific guidance based on your individual healing process.
